Sacred Spaces and Special Places
Welcome to the Sacred Spaces and Special Places Map!
This First Nations Sacred Spaces and Special Places map has been created to preserve Traditional oral knowledge as a cultural mapping tool in a wholistic manner. To honour our ancestors and acknowledge the interconnected relationships between all beings on earth First Nations wisdom and knowledge should be recorded for future generations.
This cultural maps are an interactive Google based mapping application. The system allows users to record layers of information in a location specific or geo-referenced format. Geo-referencing is a way to visually connect Traditional Knowledge with the land and equate that knowledge with western science. The online Google API also allows for pictures, video and audio to be geo-referenced. The layers of knowledge that can be recorded include oral, cultural and natural history priorities. As more layers are added, seasonal patterns, activities, sacred places, special places and historic knowledge will emerge, linking space and time, relevant to the participating community. This living document can contribute vital information to the preservation of historic and contemporary knowledge and can be used to collate all types of information. It can also contribute to effective land use planning, community development and policy revisions for subsequent generations.
The maps are user friendly and the privacy of information is password protected and maintained by the participating First Nation communities utilizing a specific username.
